IMPORTANT Ca. 500 BCE GLACIAL KAME SHELL BEAD STRAND WITH MOTHER of PEARL GORGET. Measurements: The beads total in length 14 inches. They are irregular in shape and dimension, each approximately 1/2 to 3/4inches in diameter.The gorget is about 1 3/4 inches in diameter and the two beads affixed as \"eyes\" are 3/4 an 1/2 inches respectively.
(NOTE: a \"Kame\" is an area of sand mounds atopped by gravel deposited by a meltingice sheet)
Historically, the Glacial Kame Culture comprised archaic people who occupied southern Ontario, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana from about 8000 BCE to 1000BCE. They buried their dead atop glacier deposited gravel covering the hills in their vicinity. The ice had left shells like those used by the Native Americans for bead-making spanning six thousand years of habitation.
IMPORTANT: Dating the listed strand: 500 BCE may be conservative, and some of the shell beads and gorget may be much older; one should notice they also appear to be of differing fabric and style, so that it is not impossible the necklace spans a broader time spectrum than indicated.
CONDITION: These are excavated beads and gorget. They show expected surface aging. Nothing has been done torepair or restore them. They are as found.
Remarks: These extremely rare and important beads have archeological provenance and a known chain of ownership, The labels are still attached indicating they originated from the \"Bailey Gravel Kame\" near Keaton, Ohio and were a gift in 1959 from John Ramses to the late Russell Long which collection housed them until recent times.
