WWI Pennsylvania National Guard, Regimental State Colors • ANNIN Silk w/ Knotted Fringing

NOTE : VIEW THE KNOTTED FRINGING AND THIS IS THE KEY TO DATING IT TO THE WWI ERA

NOTE: THIS FLAG IS NOT MADE OF RAYON, OR NYLON. This flag is SILK with a Silk Embroidered Pennsylvania State Coat of Arms. You can note that this flag is WWI era by the KNOTS on the end of all the fringing. This practice was used from the end of the Indian War period through WWI. You may see US Army Regimental flags with knotted fringing through the end of the 1930s to WWII. This is from the Quarter Master Depot making Regimental flag Blanks that were exhausted by 1942. These tags were all blue. This is right after the Quartermaster Corps, Philadelphia Depot, US ARMY changed to the Intermediate Philadelphia QM Depot between 1920 through 1927.

Flag makers like ANNIN & Co NY stopped putting knots on the end of the fringing around 1920. I recently sold a WWII government contract flag manufactured by ANNIN & Co NY. It was given to a member of Congress from Florida in 1945. The tag was blue, but the size of the flag was a standard 3ft by 5ft and the fringing didn\'t have knots. ANNIN & Co NY used the blue label through the early 1950s. These labels state Acetate or Rayon.

I guarantee that this flag is from the World War 1 era and by the size of 4ft by 4ft this flag was used by the Pennsylvania National Guard or PNG.

For your consideration is this truly beautiful WWI Regimental State Colors of the State of Pennsylvania.

This flag is near to square. This is the hallmark of the ground forces of the US Army, Army Reserves, & National Guard. This flag measures 4ft by 4ft and is made of silk. The state coat of arms is silk embroidered and the blue field is made of silk too. The knotted fringing is made of silk too. The sleeve is silk with leather tabs is the upper and lower sleeve. The sleeve is also lined by flannel.

This is probably the earliest ANNIN flag that I have owned as this flag dates from 1916 through 1920. You can tell that this flag was used in the field because the fringing has been beaten by the wind and is nearly gone on the fly end.

You may never find another PNG Regimental State Colors like this.

Battle Flags of the US

Battle flags used by the American military are a special category of flags unto themselves.  Prior to the Mexican War in the late 1840s, American military units typically did not carry American flags into battle.  The primary use of flags in this early epoch was for Navy and maritime use.  By the 1840s, Army units began to carry the Stars and Stripes, but surviving examples from this era are extremely rare.  American flags for commercial or home use during the pre-Civil War era was almost non-existent.  It wasn\'t until the Civil War that the use of the Stars and Stripes for military, commercial, and home use became mainstream in American culture.  American battle flags in particular, both in the Stars and Stripes format, and in the heraldic eagle forms used for headquarters flags, saw widespread use during the Civil War, and the practice continues to this day.  Recognizing an American battle flag is sometimes challenging, but those gathered from the Rare Flags collection and presented here should help you identify them.

The most common indicators of a Army battle flag made for use by ground forces include:

•The presence of fringe around the borders of a flag

•Embroidered, gilt-painted, or silk sewn stars

•Hoists that consist of the stripe or colored material, rather than a separate white hoist

•The presence of ribbon-like ties or a sleeve along the hoist edge of the flag

•large, nearly square shape, which often indicates a regimental color

•The use of silk fabric in the flag\'s construction

flag of Pennsylvania

U.S. state flag consisting of a dark blue field (background) bearing a central coat of arms with black horses as supporters.

In 1777 a seal was created bearing the coat of arms now found on the state flag. The Pennsylvania legislature authorized the use of the coat of arms on a flag for the state militia on April 9, 1799, and variations on this flag design were used throughout the 19th century. Finally, on June 13, 1907, a state flag for nonmilitary purposes was approved by the legislature, and it is still in use.

Agriculture and commerce are represented in the coat of arms by the ship and the wheat sheaves (apparently copied from the municipal seal of Pennsylvania, the plow (which appeared in the earlier coat of arms of Chester county), the wreath of corn and olive, and the horses in harness. The state motto, “Virtue, liberty and independence,” is inscribed on the ribbon below the arms. The standard of the Pennsylvania governor employs the same design on a background of white rather than blue.

History of the flag

Originally authorized by the state in 1798, the current design was enacted by law on June 13, 1907, specifically standardizing the field of blue to be the \"same color as the blue field in the flag of the United States of America.
